Naira! Our teacher brought us money a couple of weeks ago. The exchange rate right now is about ₦ 161 to $ 1. On every note is a prominent Nigerian man from different regions of Nigeria. The man on this bill is Obafemi Awolowo (a Yoruba name!). He, like all the men on the bills was one of the country’s founding fathers. Awolowo was the country’s leading social democratic politician at the time he was elected as President of the Yorubas. From a poor trade union family, educated at LSE, Awolowo returned to his country a defender of the people. He supported limited public ownership and central planning in government. He believed that the state should channel Nigeria’s resources into education and state-led infrastructural development and that healthcare should be a national priority.
